As its formation date of 1976 suggests, The Cure started, like any aspiring rock act in the UK during the latter half of the 1970s, as primarily a punk and straight rock band in their initial incarnations as Malice and Easy Cure in 1977 - the Sex Pistols were a key influence, along with the Buzzcocks, Stranglers, The Sensational Alex Harvey Band, Elvis Costello and others as diverse as The Beatles, David Bowie, Roxy Music and numerous glam rock bands. Michael Dempsey and Lol Tolhurst were childhood friends, with Tolhurst and Smith having known each other since their very first school days, and Dempsey and Tolhurst having been almost entirely constant performers in Smith's previous school bands.ДЇor those who are only familiar with with the Cure's sound through a few singles and one or two albums from the mid-1980s to the release of Mixed Up or Wish, with their instantly recognizable austere yet insanely catchy and richly layered combination of guitar-driven danceable synth pop and proto-techno, it may come as a mild surprise to realise just how long the band had been active and how they originated. So we have the first full-length LP from three ambitious youngsters in London who'd just been signed up by Polydor and Fiction records boss Chris Parry, and were aiming to establish themselves in at least the national rock circuit after building a useful local reputation in the somewhat provincial and unglamorous backwater of Crawley - would this album get them off to the desired flying start?
